Join us as we kick off Breast Cancer Awarness Month...Journalist-writer, Vera Golik, and photographer-sociologist, Hugo Lenzi put together the OPEN HEARTED (De Peito Alberto) Project after they dealt with cancer cases among family members. The OPEN HEARTED Project focuses on the importance of a humanistic approach in dealing with each phase of hte disease: the discovery-- the shock of finding ou the diagnosis; the process that one undergoes when dealing with breast cancer which as a direct impact on symbols of womanhood such as the loss of breasts, hair, fertility, and sexual drive; the support-- how human kindness-- or the lack of it-- affects the outcome of medical treatment; and the overcoming-- how each woman was able to transform her experience in personal growth. Art is a way to deconstruct paradigms. The Project hopes to provoke, challange, and is also a cry out to health professionals that fail to see the patient, instead only the disease; but to see them as a complete human being with a unique life history; and helping to make patients instrumental in their own recovery. It is a chance for family and friends to give support, care, and undergo change themselves.
"Throughout the sensitive photo shoots and personal experience deposition sessions, as well as the interactive conferences, we always focus on promoting an open dialogue among all those involved--patients, doctors, friends, and family members--so to bring surface the human dimension that surroudns the disease. We met women who rose to show their true warrior side rather than give in to their circumstance; doctors who did not limit their focus on the disease; they treated the person; health professionals that went beyond their special training and focused on understanding, listening, lending a shoulder and support so crucial to people who are going through such a hard time. Experiences that show how human relations demolish barriers and ease diffcult times; they bring effective results in the recovery of a woman's self-esteem as well as in the cancer treatment itself. This is what this project aims to accomplish and is what we believe deep in our hearts and with our open heart."
